Congratulations to Brenda Goldberg of Shaker Heights. On August 9 she played in a Regional Bridge Tournament in Dayton, OH with her partner, Rosalyn Sukenik of Cleveland and teammates Molly and Stan Jaffe of Beachwood, in the Compact Bracketed Knockout Teams. Their team was slotted into Bracket three of the event and they finished in fourth place winning almost four gold master points and putting her over the top to become a Life Master.
This hand was key to winning the second match of the day. With the opponents active in the bidding, Goldberg used a cue-bid to let her partner know that she had a very good hand and could support either major. Sukenik bid her six card heart suit and after the club lead, twelve tricks were pretty easy.
At the other table, with similar bidding interference, the North-South pair landed in five diamonds. After a club lead, declarer had a tough decision regarding what to play at trick two. The spade finesse is the best play because the South hand may never gain the lead after that. Unfortunately, declarer played the jack of hearts and in the fullness of time lost a diamond, a heart, and a spade.
