This hand is from a rubber bridge game where the participants were all playing a standard bidding system. The bidding was excellent. Three spades by North was a "limit raise" showing nine or ten points and four card spade support. South's four heart bid showed slam interest with first round control of the heart suit.
Even with the fifth spade, North doesn't have any other bid than four spades. South's five spade bid now asks a specific question: How good is your spade support?
North has excellent spade support and bids the small slam. West led the jack of diamonds. With the queen of clubs falling doubleton, South was able to make all thirteen tricks.
It should be noted that a five spade call does not always ask the same question. In the sequence shown above, if South, at his second turn to bid, went directly to five spades, he would be asking about control of the heart suit - the suit bid by the opponents.
These types of bids don't come up that often and it is good to take the time to discuss them with your regular partner. It would be a shame to hold cards like these and not get to the lay down slam.
