Glenn Cover of Stow held the South cards when this hand was played at the Rock and Roll Regional Bridge Tournament in Independence earlier this month. Cover's aggressive four spade bid may be explained by the fact that the North-South pairs were not seeing much in the way of honor cards during that evening's session, so he was a little overwhelmed by all of the pictures in his hand.
West led the ten of diamonds which came around to the king. Cover played the ten of clubs. West played low and East won the jack. There was nothing to be gained from continuing diamonds, so East played the ace of hearts. That card held the trick and East continued with the four. South won the king and played a small club, trumped in dummy.
A small spade was led to South's ace, and another club was trumped in dummy. The ace of diamonds provided a resting spot for South's last club.
At this point, Cover conceded a trick to the outstanding king of spades and claimed ten tricks, making his contract. With a combined total of only 18 high card points, Gover was able to utilize his distributional assets to bring the game home.
